The region has a typically Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild winters. The Barossa Valley lies within South Australia’s coastal temperate zone. The mostly placid waters of Gulf St. Vincent are 60-70 kilometres away. From the standpoint of the grape, the valley is regarded as a warm district, with summer temperatures often rising to 35°C.
Our gently sloping Marananga vineyard consists of 10.5 HA planted to four grape varieties. On the North Para River flood plain, the deep alluvial soils are perfectly suited to our old vine Semillon and Chardonnay holdings with our Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon planted on Kalmina sand over red clay and ironstone.
Vines and hand pruned to typical two bud spurs and a single or two-wire trellis system is used to allow some over hang of shoots in summer in order to shield the fruit from the hottest days. Hand harvesting is only employed for our oldest vines and those destined for the Ancient Method label.
